Capital City Public Charter School
3047 15th Street NW, Washington DC
2003
After designing the first site for Capital City Public Charter School, Shinberg.Levinas was invited to build a new home to accommodate the school’s expansion. The project consisted of both renovation & major addition within a 1912 masonry and stone building. This building, with classical Roman vocabulary, had long been considered an important presence within the Mount Pleasant community, having been used for many years as a sanctuary for the National Presbyterians.
This was an extremely challenging project for both design and technical issues. The interior structure was removed completely and a new structure dropped in and new space was added both above and on two sides. A rooftop playground was created for the younger children.
