March 9 2012 – 50 US Architects: Residential + Planning - a new hardcover book written by award-winning author Damir Sinovcic and published by Design Book was unveiled on Friday, March 9, 2012 at an exclusive book launch event hosted by the Bass Museum of Art on Miami Beach, Florida. Guest speakers included Guy Peterson, FAIA, Principal of Guy Peterson | Office for Architecture and Roger Ferris, AIA, RIBA, Principal of Roger Ferris + Partners.

50 US Architects: Residential + Planning presents a curated collection of award-winning residential and master planning work from leading American designers whose philosophies are rooted in the modernist doctrine or are distilled from vernacular precedents. Meticulously detailed and site-specific, the featured projects focus on sustainability, technology, and the human spirit. Award winning designers from all 50 states are included in the publication and Shinberg.Levinas | Architectural Design was selected to represent the state of Maryland.

The projects by Shinberg.Levinas featured in the book are the Sherman Residence, Gillon Residence, and Burling Court, all located in Bethesda, MD.

Capital City PCS at Rabaut – construction progress

Work continues at the new Capital City Public Charter School campus at Rabaut. Plans are for the multiple Capital City campus locations to be consolidated in the renovation of this 172,000 sf former DCPS location. Starting last week, exterior improvements, including brand new triple-glazed performance window units, were being installed. Soon work will move to interior finishes as construction races to the finish line in time for the fall semester!

EL Haynes PCS – Topping Out

Friday was a big day at the EL Haynes PCS – Kansas Avenue campus. The construction crew finished building the steel frame of the building, and it is now at its tallest. To celebrate, the team held a ‘topping out’ party. People from the school, teachers, the construction company, and the architectural team were on site to watch the school’s top performing students sign the last piece of steel, before it was lifted and installed in place.

EL Haynes PCS – Construction Progress

Steel is going up at EL Haynes PCS, Kansas Ave campus. As you can see from the photo, there is already significant progress and the team is quickly moving to the second floor.

DC Preparatory Academy PCS – Play Deck – Teacher Orientation

The DC Preparatory Academy PCS Play Deck is officially finished and open for use. Teacher orientation was Friday, May 30. The staff had a lot of fun and even engaged in a quick game of kickball to celebrate. Students will see the new space for the first time next week, after Spring break. We’re looking forward to seeing their reaction and watching them enjoy the new play deck.

DC Prep – Orientation

Kol Shalom featured in Washington Jewish Week

Kol Shalom, a synagogue designed by Shinberg.Levinas, currently under construction in Rockville, MD, was featured in the March 22 2012 edition of the Washington Jewish Week.

The building, phase 1 of the 2-phase project, is scheduled for an end of April opening. Writer Suzanne Pollak interviewed the synagogue’s Rabbi Maltzman and executive director Deborah Finkelstein ahead of the anticipated move-in date. The congregation is excited to finally have a permanent home, after a 10 year journey. Shinberg.Levinas is excited to have been chosen for this task.

E.L. Haynes Public Charter School – under construction

The latest addition to the E.L. Haynes Public Charter School campus in Washington, DC., is taking shape at Kansas Avenue. The new high school building will include a large light-filled lobby, double-height cafe space with an outdoor terrace, an office and professional development suite, a gymnasium, classrooms, science and computer labs, as well as a large outdoor learning space.

Since the December groundbreaking, there has been a lot of digging and carving, to allow for the start of construction of basement footings and walls.

Now the basement walls are completed and the slab is poured. Next up – the building’s steel frame!

DC Preparatory Academy PCS – Play Deck – update!

The construction of the play deck at DC Preparatory Academy PCS is almost complete! The elevated structure more than triples the school’s existing playground. Built over an existing parking area on an adjacent lot, the playground serves students in the elementary and middle schools separated by Edgewood Street. The structure is accessible from the second level of the adjacent building via exterior stairwells.

Maya Angelou PCS – library studies

We’re excited for the return of the Maya Angelou PCS project, in Washington, DC. For reference, we’ve included some images of the exterior. The latest round of studies concentrated on the library interior. As seen from the images, the library is a three-level space: first level consists of book stacks, second – computer station, and third – more private computer use and meeting spaces. They are united by three-story atrium space, wood wall paneling, and a skylight allowing additional light into the space.
