Built in 1909 as a storefront retail and office building, the Jenifer Building had fallen on hard times with the decline of Washington's 7th Street shopping district. As the district regained its vitality, the project was dedicated to completely renovating this handsome structure while creating a two-story addition on top of the existing building.
The addition features recessed loggias and penthouse offices under sloped glass, sympathetic in materials and proportions to the original building. The overall project also included the historic renovation of the façade, the reconstruction of ground-floor storefronts, and space planning services for two major tenants.
Critical elements for the project's success were presentations before the Architect of the Capitol, the Pennsylvania Avenue Development Corporation, and the Commission of Fine Arts. Each considered the issues of discretely adding levels to the structure, and each gave the design their approval.
