Image This new school, to occupy an existing second-floor space, had straightforward educational program requirements, but a dilemma for use of the space. Large windows on three sides provided a natural layout for a belt of classrooms around a center multi-media room, but that center space would be dark without some special treatment. Our challenge was not just to light it, but also to connect it to the spaces around it.
This was accomplished by making the multi-media room a kind of "lantern" of translucent material that is a glowing core for the entire school. The classroom walls, in turn, were perforated with large "window boxes" at child-height, to allow a controlled visual link.
To create the impression of yet more light, the hall ceiling consists of sky-blue acoustical tiles. Below them are panels of lightweight, cloud-like panels of a light-transmitting material, from which lights bounce a glow off the ceiling and down the corridor, supplementing the lantern.
