This synagogue called for a 12,300-square-foot addition to its sanctuary,
fellowship hall and educational facilities, as well as the upgrading
of its library, kitchen and administrative areas.
Using natural materials and symbolic forms,
Shinberg.Levinas expanded the sanctuary's capacity from 450 to 850 worshippers
while maintaining a strong sense of warmth and intimacy. Features include
a Torah at the center, with a symbolic layering around it of three walls:
the wailing wall of Jerusalem, the seven gates of the Old City and the
Hebrew alphabet inscribed in gold. Light washes down on the sanctuary
in different manners at different times of the day, transforming the
mood from sunrise to sunset.
Anticipating the congregation's future growth
and desire for multi-use spaces, the design also features movable partitions
to maximize flexibility. The lower floor plan provides additional classroom
space and clerical areas.
