Carved out of an entirely renovated office building at the heart of Washington's business district, the Hugo Boss storethe German designer's U.S. prototypewas designed to be as elegant and timeless as the clothing it showcased. Its commercially cluttered location challenged the architect to merge European design with American "shoppability," for design that conveys intimacy yet always feels modern.
Merchandise is the focal point: Displays are accessible and flexible, easily reshuffled to create new moods or configurations. Materials are sophisticated but warmstained oak walls, terrazzo floors, glass tables and displays. The recessed lighting can be tilted, brightened or dimmed to spotlight a single item or illuminate a larger area.
