This mixed-use project converted a wonderful and historic row house in Washington's Sheridan-Kalorama neighborhood into spaces for a nonprofit organization and a residence. The complete renovation included the upgrading of finishes and integration of new systems, making the 9,400-square-foot building a useful and distinguished neighborhood asset.
To resolve major zoning issues, Shinberg.Levinas first had to show how the building would accommodate mixed-use facilities without harming its functional goals or resale potential. Next, to resolve code issues involving fire separation and egress, we negotiated solutions for the unique issues of this building and use with city officials, created a separate staircase for each use and integrated other elements subtly and seamlessly into the design (office and residential).
Last, the building renovation was successfully reviewed for compatibility to historic preservation issues, a critical step for many buildings of this vintage and character.
