Our clients had purchased a contemporary house overlooking a ski resort in Aspen, Colorado, and wanted to create a large room for entertaining. The addition would include a small kitchen/wet bar and a pool table, and would take advantage of the magnificent views over the mountains beyond.
Our design features a high, curved ceiling that is replicated in a second area where the pool table is. Panoramic views seem to bring the mountain inside, while a solid stone wall and fireplace on the north side both protect the house against the cold and anchor the addition to the mountain. The addition extends seamlessly onto a dramatic deck whose steel construction complements the trees, sky and snow surrounding it.
From the exterior, the design features an all-copper roof and timber columns.
The result is an addition that significantly increases the home's size, integrates with its natural surroundingsand yet complies with extremely strict regulations imposed by the homeowner's association.
