An organic integration of old and new, this project consisted of transforming a "typical" one-story rambler into a two-story residence more suited to the increasingly upscale nature of its Washington, D.C., neighborhood.
The challenge was to accomplish this without altering the basic configuration of the first floorto create a second story that works perfectly with the existing house.
Our solution lay in incorporating a large overhanging roof that, attached to a vertical element, anchors the second floor to the ground floor. Made of cypress, this vertical element is complemented by two horizontal cypress curves extending outward to the right and left, from the second and first floors, respectively.
The cypress curves serve an interior purpose also: Beneath each is a large, semi-circular window from which light radiates throughout the house.
