This project is a conversion of an abandoned 1890's DC Public School into 16 large, very bright and open apartments. Each takes advantage of the school's existing heavy masonry walls, and high ceilings and windows to form large volumes. Service spacesclosets, utility cores, kitchens and bathsare tucked into spaces that had at one time been the school's cloak rooms, ventilation shafts and hallways, allowing the large volumes to remain uncluttered. Of the 16 units, 12 make their main spaces from original 24' x 36' classrooms.
The area beneath the huge roof had never been used, but now contains 4 multi-level skylit lofts with fireplaces. "Inside balconies" are cut into the roof to take advantage of spectacular views of the city without harming the main form of this venerable building.
