The Dance Insitute of Washington will have a new home in the redevoloping area of Columbia Heights. On the basis of its program and the proposed architectural design, the Institute was awarded the land by the National Capital Redevelopment Authority.
Their program combines outreach to local youth, in addition to a professional dance company. The design takes advantage of its prominent location across from the historic Tivoli Theater, and situates the dance studios directly over the street. Large expanses of glass provide both light to the interior and, with an integrated projection system, large-scale images of dancers in motion to passersby.
The dynamic form expresses the qualities of dance, movement combined with discipline, while creating a public space at the entrance to enrich the urban design agenda of the redevelopment. The lower level is designed for use as a child development center.
