The renovation of the 1924 "Oddfellows Hall" into a 30,000 square-foot school required the careful balancing of a complex mix of functions. In addition to the typical school requirements (classrooms, administrative areas, gym, cafeteria, auditorium), the facility had to accommodate on-site dormitories, community outreach facilities and a catering business, with kitchen and office.
    Color and lighting are used extensively to influence students' energy levels in classrooms and in spaces requiring less intense focus. Color also helps tie together key program spaces around the five-story building, by applying the same color to large stairways, that everyone uses, to those spaces.
    Shinberg.Levinas worked closely with teachers, staff and students in identifying the students' special learning needs. In addition, we welcomed early contractor input and collaborated closely with experienced consultants. The project manager/architect/contractor team worked found cost-efficient solutions, and the project opened in time for the Fall 2000 school year.
