Montgomery County’s PARK(ing) Day

Responsible Design - Montgomery County’s PARK(ing) Day

Shinberg.Levinas Architects participated in Montgomery County’s PARK(ing) Day event transforming two parking spaces into a community park that called attention to the need of more urban open space and reflected on the state of the environment. Shinberg.Levinas converted two parking spaces located between Elm St and Bethesda Ave (in front of Barnes & Nobles in Downtown Bethesda) into an island of plywood seating structures, contained between bamboo groves at either end.

The concept of this design was to break the regular grid of the street landscape with an artificial environment oasis. The installation will be donated to a school. PARK(ing) Day is an annual, worldwide event that creates temporary public spaces in cities and towns around the world.

At this community park, visitors gathered to sit, interact, play, and reflect. This event lasted until 3:30pm (when the meter run out).
