Supporting Social Justice

On Saturday, June 12th, Shinberg.Levinas participated in a historic ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center in Washington, DC. This Park has been renamed after Captain George Pointer and to commemorate the Pointer family, a black family whose land was claimed by eminent domain in 1928 to build the Lafayette school and park. Amongst event attendees was Mayor Muriel Bowser, and descendants of the Pointer family and students from the Lafayette School, who had advocated the name change.

Our firm contributed to the design of the new Lafayette-Pointer Recreation Center. The community has welcomed the new Center, which offers a multi-purpose room, reception and office areas, bathrooms, kitchenette and a classroom. The exterior design of the building utilizes steel, stone, and slate to create a structure that integrates into the neighborhood yet offers a modern perspective.

Principal Salo Levinas is proud to have been a part of such a memorable event. And a huge thank you to parties involved with the project itself: Friends of Lafayette Park (FOLP), DGS, DPR, Blue Skye Construction, and Chevy Chase Historic DC.
