Madrid Art Studio
Madrid, Spain
This 500-square-meter studio and gallery in Madrid, Spain, was designed both as an exhibition space and a creative retreat, and for its owner, an internationally renowned art collector and artist. Set within a former textile workshop, the project preserves the historic concrete structure while reimagining it as a multifunctional space for curating, creating, and living.
The program integrates a public gallery to exhibit the client’s collection, a studio for painting, storage for more than 400 artworks and 10,000 books, and a private residence. Upon entering, visitors are invited to flow into the expansive main gallery with 5-meter-high ceilings or ascend a few steps to the more intimate residential area. The raised floor in the private quarters establishes a visual and spatial separation from the public zones, allowing the originally high windows to be redefined, framing direct outward views, and creating a sense of intimacy.
At the heart of the plan lies a small interior patio, designed as a reinterpretation of the building's existing courtyard. The interior patio is a space to enjoy the fresh air and entertain small groups within the limitations of a large industrial warehouse. The light and greenery flood through the glass walls into the studio, offering a moment of calm and a reminder of nature within the arid landscape of Madrid.
